The introduction of the Hydroponic Farm Japan Grandpa dome has been quite a revelation for the local farmers owing to the fact that these domes do not even remotely resemble anything that they have seen formerly. Before going in to the details of how they work, here’s a basic description of the same:

Farming gets much easier with this clever Hydroponic system whereby someone (who does not require any prior expertise in farming) just plants seedlings in the middle. The lettuces then shift as they grow thereby giving these seeds more room.

It was not only the appearance of the dome that surprised the local farmers beyond measure, but the fact that one could sow seedlings while standing could never be imagined before!

How it Works
It is a circular plantation system whereby the vegetables are planted in the centre. The entire circle rotates automatically thereby pushing the vegetables out in the process. The rotational motion of the circle is driven by the blue taps at the edge of the circle. The seedlings are sown everyday with the vegetable coming out after around 30 days- appearing on the outer row of the circle where they’re harvested. The circle rotates for an hour per day.

An employee plants lettuce seedlings in a vegetable plant at Granpa Farm Rikuzentakata, in Japan’s Iwate prefecture, on Sept. 26. A total of 8 dome-shaped hydroponic vegetable plants operated by Granpa Farm Rikuzentakata, a group farming subsidiary of Granpa Co. which was opened last month as part of the region’s reconstruction efforts in an area damaged by the tsunami following the earthquake on March 11, 2011, produces 3,600 heads of lettuce a day.
